Daily Broadcast Evaluation

The e-MAS team recently received a rating of OUTSTANDING from the industry professionals who partner with the ITV program of Polk county.  We had to  select a news show from a randomly drawn two week period to submit for evaluation.

Congratulations to all of the students involved in producing such a high quality broadcast!

Production Journal Make Up Assignment

The organizational requirements of my course have proven to be an unwelcome challenge to many of my students.  90% of failing ITV students owe their low grade to a failure to turn in the planning/evaluation graphic organizer after the broadcast of each news show.

My usual grading policy is to accept late work without penalty.  I find that this always leaves the door open to student success.   No student ever need give up hope because they've irreparably damaged their grade.  They simply need to do the work.  Assignments, quizzes, tests and projects are all designed to facilitate and support the overall learning process anyway so if they do the work and practice/assess the skill they've still accomplished what I intended... just not when I intended it.

This won't work with the production journal evaluations.  Asking a student to evaluate a show they worked on two months ago is impractical.  It would be difficult to recall specific details.  I anticipate two types of submissions if I follow normal protocol with these assignments: NO submission because students couldn't think of anything and FALSE submissions based upon imaginary or incomplete anecdotal musings.  Neither of these support the learning process.

My alternative is to offer an ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT which provides students a chance to practice a skill we've already developed in class.  They will also need to utilize reference and research skills as well as writing for a specific audience.

Posted and linked below are the specifications for the alternative assignment.  STUDENTS MAY COMPLETE ONE REPLACEMENT ASSIGNMENT FOR EVERY MISSING PRODUCTION JOURNAL/EVALUATION and/or PRODUCTION PRODUCT GRADE.

PB 1.13 and the WRITING NEWS Presentation Now Available!

PB 1.13 and the Writing News presentation (with video links) is available now via the class website or through this direct link. http://goo.gl/03067k

Students can work through the material ahead of time, demonstrate comprehension, and spend more time in the lab applying production skills and using equipment.

Students should keep a page of notes (or print the PDF and handwrite notes on the slides) along with questions they might have or connections between presented content and our e-MAS procedures. Be sure to complete any writing activities from the presentation.

Solid Crew, Editing Ahead!

I'm super excited about all of the hard work students have put into their first round of graded shows! We have some very talented performers and a great technical crew! The next piece of the broadcast puzzle is a group of editors. These students will be in charge of assembling footage and creating graphics toroduce the final broadcast product. After we finish up our broadcast writing fundamentals unit, we'll be launching into the editing fundamentals unit.  This will take us through the rest of the first grading period and into the second.

The e-MAS team this year is rock solid and ready to produce a high quality daily broadcast on a regular basis.

Setting up for a voice over in the studio

Below is a diagram detailing how to set up equipment for a voice over in the studio. This diagram can also be used to set up for vocal recording of a music video.

The input signal goes from a microphone in the studio to an XLR cable which runs through the wall port into the iMac lab to the Zoom H4n input which is connected to the computer via USB.

The monitor signal goes from the computer audio out port to a 1/8 splitter.  From there one side gets a set of headphones for the computer operator while the other side gets a long 1/8 to 1/8 cable which runs through the wall port to a 1/8 barrel adapter then to another set of headphones.

Here's a sketch:

Moodle Module: Process of Production - Production

The second module in Moodle this semester will deal with the PRODUCTION phase of what we do.  The assignments will be graded seperately and students are in charge of whether they complete the assignments in class during production time or at home.  The second module assignments will be due on March 7.

Production Calendar=WINNING!

I'm extremely proud of the newly formed 2nd semester news crews. We've switched up a major procedure when it comes to planning our news shows and they are rockin' and rollin' with the changes. In the time it would normally take us to plan two news shows, we've managed to plan almost every show for the rest of the year! Way to go e-MAS crews! I can't wait to begin production on these well organized broadcasts.

2014 Lucid Film Festival Website Up

I've decided to publish the 2014 Lucid Film Festival website "as is" and delegate all further content creation to students. Students will work collaboratively using MyPolkApps to generate plot summaries, cast bios, and much more.  I'm looking forward to the journey as this year's festival takes shape beneath creative, capable hands of my wonderful students.

You can check out the site by following the link below.

Welcome to the Second Semester!

The second semester of ITV will continue to produce daily episodes of e-MAS, but also carry a stronger emphasis upon cinematic technique and digital storytelling. Students will have multiple opportunities to write, operate equipment, and edit video projects.

As with last semester, students can access all relative resources via the class website http://tinyurl.com/itvhome. This includes Moodle, student portal (for grade checking), and all notes presented in class.

As a side note, behavioral expectations are high when it comes to these privileges and those students who fail to maintain those expectations will be given alternate assignments.

Also, quick reminder that the 5 Frame Comic homework assignment is due on Monday for odd classes and Tuesday for even classes. Details in student portal and at https://docs.google.com/a/mypolkschools.net/document/d/1JCiV6onlp91sIKnwbP2l6PtufaDAFeP960dQAbc4o-o/edit?usp=docslist_api

Just for fun, here's the uncropped collage from the "Welcome to ITV" presentation.
